Sefar Medical Applications

Sefar provides precision medical mesh and fabricated solutions for a wide range of medical applications, combining biocompatibility, reliability and high-performance textile engineering.
Medical Fabrics and Components for Advanced Applications
Precision fabrics perform critical functions in medical applications - from filtration and fluid management to separation, protection, tissue transport, and venting. Sefar combines engineered materials with customized fabrication to help medical R&D teams develop reliable components for specific device, process, and manufacturing requirements.
SEFAR MEDIFAB® Precision-Woven Medical Fabrics
SEFAR MEDIFAB® open-mesh fabrics combine precisely defined mesh openings with high throughput, dimensional stability, and consistent material properties. The monofilament fabrics support demanding filtration, separation, protection, and fluid-management functions in medical devices.
SEFAR MEDITEX® Customized Medical Solutions
SEFAR MEDITEX® extends the material range through specialty polymers, knitted fabrics, multilayer structures, composite membranes, and functional surface treatments. Material properties and fabricated formats can be adapted to specific device functions, integration processes, and performance requirements.
Quality and Regulatory Support
Sefar operates an ISO 13485 quality-management system and can fabricate components in ISO Class 7 cleanrooms. Depending on the product family, biological testing, batch documentation, certificates of conformity, traceability, and qualification support are available. The applicable requirements and testing scope are defined according to the selected material and final device application.

Reliable Filtration for Transfusion and Cardio Devices
Transfusion Systems
Transfusion and autotransfusion systems require dependable particle retention without restricting the necessary blood flow. Variations in mesh opening or material properties can affect the reliability and performance of the complete set.
SEFAR MEDIFAB® precision-woven monofilament fabrics combine high throughput with precisely controlled mesh openings and proven biocompatibility. Sefar offers an extensive range of woven fabrics and fabricated medical filter components for transfusion applications.
Transfusion Systems
During open-heart surgery, extracorporeal circulation systems temporarily perform essential heart and lung functions. Their filter components must provide reliable blood filtration while maintaining the required flow.
Sefar’s precision-woven monofilament fabrics are an established industry standard for cardio devices. High throughput rates, precise mesh openings, and proven biocompatibility contribute to the reliability and performance of extracorporeal circuits.

Secure Tissue Transport
Delicate tissue intended for transplantation or biopsy must remain securely contained, hydrated, and protected throughout transport and surgical preparation. The carrier must permit fluid exchange and visual inspection while allowing easy tissue removal.
Customized Fabrics and Components for Implants and Medical Devices
Implants and invasive medical devices can require a specific combination of porosity, flexibility, strength, material composition, and surface properties. Standard materials and production methods may not meet the functional, regulatory, or manufacturing requirements of the device.
Sefar develops customized fabrics and fabricated components based on the customer’s design. Support includes material and component development, process development, verification, and qualification. A dedicated engineering team designs and builds custom machines to meet high-volume production requirements, ensuring scalability and consistency. Components can be fabricated in an ISO Class 7 cleanroom.
Wound Care Management
Advanced wound-care materials must transfer exudate while helping maintain a moist wound environment and protecting fragile granulating tissue. They must also separate the wound from secondary dressing materials without adhering to it.
SEFAR MEDIFAB® and SEFAR MEDITEX® offer smooth, homogeneous monofilament structures for wound-contact layers and negative-pressure wound therapy. Thin, transparent constructions—available below 100 µm—support visual inspection and rapid, controlled exudate transfer. The non-absorbent, non-adherent material helps maintain moisture without sticking to the wound.
Point-of-Care Diagnostics
Point-of-care tests depend on the controlled uptake and distribution of very small liquid samples. The choice of fabric construction and surface treatment directly influences wetting, wicking, flow rate, reaction time, and the reproducibility of the result.
Sefar provides woven, knitted, multilayer, and surface-treated fabrics for blood, glucose, ketone, drug, urine, and saliva testing. SEFAR MEDITEX® options include hydrophilic surfaces, specific colors, multilayer structures, and knitted fabrics. Plasma activation and wet-chemical treatments can also introduce functional groups that support the binding of antigens, antibodies, or spacer molecules.

Infusion Systems
The woven fabric in an infusion set acts as a security filter. It must retain defined particles while maintaining the required liquid throughput and integrating reliably into the filter housing.
SEFAR MEDIFAB® precision-woven monofilament fabrics fulfill or exceed applicable DIN and ISO requirements for particle retention and throughput performance. Their precisely controlled mesh openings and biocompatible construction support dependable filtration in infusion and fluid-delivery systems.
Secure Specimen Processing with Biopsy Bags
Small tissue specimens can be lost or damaged during histological processing. A biopsy bag must securely contain the specimen while allowing processing fluids to move freely around the tissue.
Premium SEFAR® BiopsyBags are fabricated from high-precision nylon mesh to reduce the risk of specimen loss. The mesh allows unrestricted fluid movement, while the material and selected mesh opening make the bag easy to open during processing. The opening remains safe for specimen removal because the bag has no bottom seam.

High-Performance Medical Microfiltration and Venting
Medical Microfiltration
Medical microfiltration requires efficient particle retention without creating excessive resistance to liquid or gas flow. Thin filtration media can also be difficult to handle, bond, and integrate into a device.
SEFAR MEDITEX® PORE combines a nanofiber filtration layer with woven and knitted support layers. The composite provides high permeability, mechanical stability, and a narrow pore-size distribution. Hydrophilic configurations offer excellent wettability and exceptional liquid flow under gravity or applied pressure.
Medical Device Venting
Medical-device vents must allow air or steam to pass while restricting particles and liquid penetration. The material must balance permeability, water resistance, filtration performance, and mechanical stability.
Hydrophobic SEFAR MEDITEX® PORE composites provide high air and steam permeability at a low pressure differential while maintaining a high water column. Their multilayer construction supports stable handling, converting, and bonding in venting and pressure-equalization components.
